NAWI – 2025 Oscar Shortlisted Feature Film

The critically acclaimed Kenyan film, Nawi, delicately unravels the harrowing global issue of child brides through a poignant and evocative narrative.

Film I Stan supported this film by providing FilmCrew Media their first UK platform to showcase NAWI, a very successful screening and Q&A session was held in London. Inspired by true events, Nawi chronicles the journey of a young girl whose moment of intellectual triumph, topping the county in the national examination- is abruptly overshadowed by an arranged marriage to a much older man, orchestrated by her father. The ensuing events depict the indomitable spirit of Nawi, a smart, unrestrained, and defiant girl, as she navigates the deeply patriarchal currents surrounding her, striving to break free and pursue her dreams of a brighter future.

Impact

NAWI is a powerful feature film that sheds light on the often-overlooked histories and identities of African descendants. Through personal narratives and cultural exploration, the film creates space for underrepresented voices and challenges colonial narratives that have erased or minimized these stories.

The story of Nawi resonates with millions of girls worldwide. According to UNICEF, over 650 million women alive today were married as children. Each year, at least 12 million girls are married before they reach the age of 18, equating to 28 girls every minute.

NAWI contributes to a growing movement of decolonial storytelling in film and media, emphasizing the importance of reclaiming heritage, honouring ancestors, and envisioning more inclusive futures. It is a clarion call to action, a beacon of hope, and a testament to the resilience and potential of young girls everywher
